Miami backs Coral Way streetscape, traffic-calming along SW 22nd Street

May 21, 2026

The Miami City Commission has approved moving forward with a streetscape and traffic‑calming program along the Coral Way corridor, authorizing design and implementation of new crosswalks, landscaping and bike-lane markings on SW 22nd Street. The action focuses on the stretch of Coral Way that runs through District 4, including segments near SW 3rd Avenue, SW 13th Avenue and the residential blocks west of SW 27th Avenue that link Shenandoah and Silver Bluff.

Details of the work were outlined by the city’s Office of Capital Improvements and the Department of Resilience and Public Works during recent agenda materials and capital project notices for District 4, which already include a completed roadway and drainage project on SW 22nd Terrace. City staff said the new Coral Way package is intended to extend that approach to the main corridor by pairing street resurfacing and curb work with safety upgrades at key crossings and bus stops, particularly where residents now dart across multiple lanes of traffic to reach shops and apartment buildings.

According to the city’s capital improvement descriptions, the plan calls for high‑visibility crosswalks, refreshed pavement markings and additional pedestrian signage at select intersections along SW 22nd Street, as well as new or upgraded medians where space allows. Landscaping elements, consistent with the city’s existing Coral Way Beautification Master Plan, would add shade trees and greenery near sidewalks and median islands to visually narrow the roadway and encourage lower speeds without reducing the number of travel lanes.

Bike-lane markings and sharrows are also slated for portions of the corridor to better connect Coral Way to surrounding neighborhood streets and existing routes toward Brickell and Coconut Grove. While no physically separated bike lanes have been finalized, the city’s Resilience and Public Works staff have indicated in project summaries that they intend to coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation’s work on SR 972/SW 22nd Street to ensure striping and signal timing are consistent along the state‑maintained sections of the route.

District 4 Commissioner Manolo Reyes, whose office has been promoting mobility upgrades along Coral Way and nearby SW 22nd Terrace in city notices, has framed the initiative as a response to long‑standing complaints from Coral Way and Shenandoah residents about speeding, cut‑through traffic and unsafe crossings near schools, churches and small businesses. Public comments submitted to the city in recent mobility and traffic‑calming outreach, including through the Miami Shenandoah Neighborhood Association’s roadway improvement discussions, have repeatedly flagged dangerous mid‑block crossings near SW 17th Avenue and limited shade and sidewalk buffers along the corridor.

Construction schedules and a final project budget have not yet been posted to the city’s online capital improvements dashboard, but officials say design coordination and permitting will be handled through the Office of Capital Improvements with further updates expected at upcoming commission meetings. Residents and business owners along SW 22nd Street are being urged by city staff to watch the Resilience and Public Works and Capital Improvements pages on miami.gov for construction notices, detour maps and opportunities to comment on specific crosswalk and landscaping locations as plans are refined.
