Merritt Island Homeowners Embrace Local Decor Trends

Merritt Island residents are increasingly turning to local businesses and artisans to infuse their homes with unique style and a touch of community spirit. From coastal-inspired accents to custom-built furniture, the demand for personalized decor is shaping local design trends.
Local interior designers report a growing interest in pieces that reflect Merritt Island's unique environment, including its beaches and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. "People want their homes to feel like Merritt Island, not just any generic Florida house," says Sarah Jenkins, owner of Coastal Living Interiors on North Courtenay Parkway. "That means incorporating natural elements, blues and greens, and often, pieces from local artists."
Small businesses specializing in home goods are seeing a boost. "We've noticed a significant uptick in customers looking for handmade items, especially those with a local theme," explains Mark Thompson, proprietor of Island Treasures, a boutique on Merritt Avenue. "Things like framed photographs of the Banana River, custom-painted signs with local landmarks, and even pottery made by artists right here on the island are flying off the shelves."
Beyond aesthetics, there's a practical side to this trend. Many homeowners are seeking durable, high-quality items that stand up to the Florida climate. "Our clients are investing in pieces that will last, and they appreciate knowing where their furniture or decor comes from," adds Jenkins. This often translates to supporting local carpenters and craftspeople who can offer bespoke solutions.
The emphasis on local decor also extends to outdoor living spaces, a crucial part of Merritt Island homes. Nurseries and garden centers report increased sales of native plants and unique outdoor furnishings designed to withstand salt air and humidity. "People are creating true outdoor rooms, and they want them to be as stylish and comfortable as their indoor spaces," says a representative from Merritt Island Nursery on Tropical Trail.
This community-driven approach to home decor not only beautifies individual residences but also strengthens the local economy, fostering a vibrant network of small businesses and artisans right here on Merritt Island.
