Mendoza Drafted First Overall by Raiders, Makes NFL History

Las Vegas selected Fernando Mendoza, quarterback from Indiana, as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Mendoza led the Indiana Hoosiers to a national championship last season, culminating in a victory over the Miami Hurricanes. His selection establishes him as the first Hispanic player chosen with the top pick in the NFL Draft.

Mendoza, a Miami native, previously played for the California Golden Bears in 2023 and 2024 before transferring to Indiana. He began his high school career at Belen Jesuit and transferred to Columbus, where he developed in a pro-style offense. Mendoza’s Heisman Trophy speech included remarks in Spanish for his grandparents. He also displayed a Cuban flag during the NFL scouting combine.

While Jim Plunkett, a Mexican-American quarterback, was drafted No. 1 overall in 1971, Mendoza's prominent Hispanic surname marks a distinct milestone. Mendoza did not attend the draft in Pittsburgh, opting to celebrate with family and friends in Miami, citing his mother's mobility needs. His family planned a traditional Cuban pig roast for the occasion.
