Memphis Voters React to Congressional District Changes

Memphis, TN – Residents of Memphis voiced frustration following legislative changes to Tennessee's congressional map. The Republican-controlled state legislature redrew district boundaries, affecting the city's representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Previously, Memphis anchored the 9th Congressional District, a district represented by Democrat Steve Cohen. The recent redistricting process, however, divided Shelby County, where Memphis is located, into three separate congressional districts.

This new configuration placed portions of Memphis into the newly created 13th Congressional District, along with surrounding rural areas. Voters in Memphis now find their city split among districts, a change from the previous single-district representation.

The legislative action resulted in a new electoral landscape for Memphis voters, who previously resided within a single congressional district. The altered district lines have shifted the political demographics of their congressional representation.
