The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report Thursday detailing a surge in measles cases across the United States. Health officials confirmed outbreaks in Illinois, New York, Washington, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Michigan, Hawaii, Arkansas, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The CDC indicated that the current number of cases represents the highest total recorded since 1996. Prior to 1996, measles cases were significantly higher. Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
