MCO vs. Sanford Airport (SFB): Which Is Better for Your Disney World Trip?

Planning a magical trip to Walt Disney World often starts with a crucial decision: which Orlando-area airport to fly into? Travelers have two primary options, Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), each offering distinct advantages and disadvantages for those heading to the Most Magical Place on Earth in the heart of Orange County.

MCO: The Primary Gateway to Central Florida

Orlando International Airport (MCO) stands as the region's largest and busiest airport, serving as the main hub for Central Florida. Located approximately 25 miles from Walt Disney World Resort, MCO offers a travel time of typically 30-45 minutes to Disney hotels, depending on traffic. This proximity means travelers are nearly at their destination shortly after leaving the airport, often passing through vibrant areas like Lake Buena Vista.

MCO boasts an extensive network of airlines, including major carriers like Delta, American, United, and Southwest, providing hundreds of daily departures and nonstop service from numerous cities across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Latin America. This competition often translates to more reasonable fares, especially when booked in advance.

The airport itself is a full-service, modern facility with a wide array of dining, shopping, and amenities. Ground transportation from MCO is plentiful, including rideshares, taxis, rental cars, shuttles, and private car services. The shorter distance to Disney also means these transportation options are generally quicker and more affordable.

SFB: The Budget-Friendly Alternative

Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is a smaller, more regional airport situated about 40 miles north of Disney World. It primarily caters to budget carriers, most notably Allegiant Air. While SFB can offer incredibly low base fares, travelers should factor in additional costs for services like carry-on bags, seat selection, and priority boarding, which can quickly add up.

The distance from SFB to Disney property is roughly 65-70 miles, translating to a travel time of 60 to 90 minutes, potentially longer with the notorious I-4 traffic that defines Orlando travel. This extended travel time can be a significant consideration for families with excited children and luggage.

SFB offers a more compact and less crowded airport experience compared to MCO. Security lines are typically shorter, and baggage claim is faster. However, amenities such as restaurants and shops are limited, and the overall infrastructure is more basic. Ground transportation options from SFB are also more restricted, with rideshare availability potentially hit or miss, and higher fares for rideshares, taxis, and private car services due to the longer distance to Disney World.

Making the Choice

For most Disney World travelers, MCO emerges as the more convenient and often more cost-effective choice when all factors are considered. Its closer proximity, wider selection of flights and airlines, and abundant ground transportation options contribute to a smoother start to a Disney vacation. While SFB can offer attractive base fares, the added costs and time for transportation to Disney, coupled with fewer amenities, often make MCO the preferred option for a stress-free arrival.
