Mary Bowman Obituary
Mary Bowman, Longtime Lakeland Resident, Passes Away
Lakeland mourns the passing of Mary Bowman, a cherished member of our lakeside community for many decades. Mrs. Bowman, 88, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Lakeland in 1937, Mary spent her entire life contributing to the fabric of our town. She was a familiar face at the Lakeland Public Library, where she volunteered for over 20 years, assisting countless residents with their literary pursuits and organizing the annual summer reading program. Her dedication to fostering a love of reading in Lakeland's youth left an indelible mark on generations of children.
Mary was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, serving on various committees and known for her beautiful floral arrangements that adorned the altar each Sunday. Her warm smile and kind words were a comfort to many within the congregation.
Beyond her community involvement, Mrs. Bowman was known for her exquisite baking, often sharing her famous apple pies with neighbors and at local bake sales. Her garden, a vibrant display of roses and hydrangeas, was a point of pride and a source of beauty on Elm Street.
She is survived by her two children, David Bowman of Lakeland and Susan Miller (née Bowman) of Oakhaven, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Bowman, in 2005.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, located at 123 Main Street in historic downtown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary's name to the Lakeland Public Library Children's Program.
