Marine Warning: Seek Shelter Now for Chandeleur Sound

Boaters in Chandeleur Sound and coastal waters from Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Stake Island out 20 nautical miles should immediately seek shelter or move to safe harbor. The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Special Marine Warning, effective until 11:45 PM CDT tonight, September 21.

Severe thunderstorms were detected at 10:38 PM CDT along a line extending from near Petit Bois Pass to 13 nautical miles southwest of Horn Island to near Cat Island, moving south at 25 knots. These storms bring a hazard of wind gusts up to 40 knots, as indicated by radar.

Small craft face potential damage from briefly higher winds and sudden, elevated waves. Wind gusts are likely to precede rainfall by several minutes. Everyone on board vessels should ensure they are wearing life jackets. This warning impacts Chandeleur Sound and the specified coastal waters.
