Manatee County Marine Patrol Rescues Dog from Intercoastal Waters
BRADENTON – A furry friend found itself in a precarious situation yesterday afternoon, April 12, when it was spotted struggling in the intercoastal waters near the Cortez Bridge in the historic fishing village of Cortez. Fortunately, the quick response of the Manatee County Marine Patrol ensured a happy ending for the canine.
According to reports from the scene, a concerned boater alerted authorities to a dog in distress, swimming alone in the busy waterway. Marine Patrol Deputy John Smith, a familiar face on the Manatee County waterways, was dispatched immediately. Upon arrival, Deputy Smith located the exhausted dog, which appeared to be a golden retriever mix, about 50 yards from the shore.
Deputy Smith skillfully maneuvered the patrol boat alongside the animal and, with the assistance of a net, was able to safely bring the dog aboard. The grateful canine, though tired, appeared to be in good health and was visibly relieved to be out of the water.
The dog was transported to the Manatee County Animal Services facility on 25th Street West in Palmetto, where it is currently being held. Staff at Animal Services are actively working to locate the dog's owner. Residents who may recognize the dog or have information regarding its owner are encouraged to contact Manatee County Animal Services at 941-742-5933.
