Manatee County Fishing Report: February 18, 2026
Anglers across Manatee County found varied success on the water this past week, with cooler temperatures influencing fish behavior. While some species remained elusive, others offered promising catches for those patient enough to find them.
Inshore, the snook bite has been slow, particularly in the shallower flats of Palma Sola Bay and the Manatee River. Experienced local guides suggest targeting deeper channels and mangrove edges during the warmer parts of the day, using live pilchards or pinfish. Redfish, however, have been more cooperative, with reports of good numbers caught near the oyster bars in Terra Ceia Bay and along the eastern shorelines of Anna Maria Island. Cut bait, such as mullet or ladyfish, proved effective for these bottom feeders.
Trout fishing saw mixed results. While some anglers reported decent hauls in the grass flats north of Longboat Pass, others struggled to locate consistent schools. Early morning and late afternoon seemed to be the most productive times, with artificial lures like soft plastics or topwater plugs yielding some strikes.
Offshore, the bite for kingfish and Spanish mackerel has been sporadic. Those venturing further out into the Gulf of Mexico, beyond the nearshore reefs, had better luck trolling spoons or live bait. Sheepshead continue to be a reliable target around bridge pilings and rock structures, particularly near the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the Cortez Bridge. Fiddler crabs and shrimp are the baits of choice for these tasty bottom dwellers.
Looking ahead, local bait shops anticipate a slight warming trend in the coming days, which could improve the overall fishing conditions. Anglers are reminded to check local regulations and ensure they have the proper licenses before heading out. For the most up-to-date information on bait availability and local hot spots, a visit to your neighborhood tackle shop, such as those found in the historic fishing village of Cortez or Bradenton, is always recommended.
