Maine Hockey Captures Hockey East Title in Orono
The Maine Black Bears men's ice hockey team claimed the Hockey East championship with a victory over UConn on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Harold Alfond Sports Arena in Orono. The championship game, played at 7:30 p.m., represented the culmination of a strong postseason run for the NCAA Division I program. The Black Bears, members of Hockey East, have now won two national championships in program history—in 1993 and 1999—and have appeared in 11 Frozen Fours.
Head coach Ben Barr has guided the program to significant success in recent years. On March 16, 2024, Barr earned his first postseason victory as Maine routed archrival New Hampshire 5-0 at Alfond Arena. The following night, the Black Bears defeated Connecticut 5-2, with Lynden Breen scoring the opening goal in a game notable for its significance to program history.
The 2024-25 season saw Maine advance through the Hockey East Tournament to reach the championship game, ultimately finishing with a 5-2 record against UConn before losing to Penn State in the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The program's home venue, Harold Alfond Sports Arena, continues to serve as a cornerstone of UMaine athletics in Orono, drawing passionate fan support throughout the hockey season.
