Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Authorities arrested Mangione in August 2023, approximately six weeks after Thompson's death.

Investigators connected Mangione to the crime through a trail of evidence. They identified him through fingerprints found on discarded shell casings near the crime scene. Additionally, federal agents located a manifesto on his computer, which contained grievances against UnitedHealthcare and Thompson.

Thompson died on July 6, 2023, after being shot outside his home in the upscale Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis. The incident occurred as he left his residence.

Court documents revealed that Mangione, a former health care analytics professional, previously lost a lawsuit against UnitedHealthcare regarding his disability benefits. He had filed this lawsuit in 2021, asserting the company wrongfully denied his long-term disability claims. A federal judge dismissed Mangione's case in 2022.

Prosecutors stated that Mangione engaged in a pattern of harassment against Thompson. This pattern included sending threatening emails and making menacing posts online. They also cited his travel to Minnesota with the intent to harm Thompson.
