BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana public health officials are advising residents to take preventative measures against Vibrio vulnificus infections. The Louisiana Department of Health reported five deaths this year attributed to the bacterium. Twenty-six non-fatal cases of Vibrio vulnificus infection have also occurred across the state. The bacterium typically thrives in warm brackish water and can cause illness through open wounds exposed to contaminated water or by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. State health officials emphasize the importance of specific precautions. Individuals with open wounds or recent surgical incisions should avoid contact with brackish or salt water. They also advise thorough cooking of all seafood, especially oysters. Dr. Tina Stefanksi, a regional medical director for the Louisiana Department of Health, highlighted the risks.
