Local Students Sharpen Skills at Resume Workshop

Students Learn Resume Essentials in Hands-On Workshop

Crystal River High School students received valuable career preparation yesterday, April 7, at a hands-on resume writing workshop held in the school's media center in Florida's scenic Nature Coast. The event, organized by the school's guidance department, aimed to equip juniors and seniors with the essential skills needed to craft compelling resumes for future job applications and college admissions.

Over 40 students participated in the interactive session, which covered everything from formatting and content organization to highlighting key achievements and tailoring resumes for specific opportunities. Local business owner, Ms. Eleanor Vance of Vance Consulting in Crystal River's historic downtown, volunteered her time to lead the workshop, sharing insights from her years of experience in human resources and recruitment.

“A strong resume is often the first impression you make,” Ms. Vance explained to the students. “It’s your chance to tell your story and demonstrate why you’re the right fit. Learning these skills now gives you a significant advantage as you move into higher education or the workforce.”

Students worked on drafting their own resumes during the workshop, receiving personalized feedback from Ms. Vance and guidance counselors. Many brought existing drafts, while others started from scratch, learning how to articulate their volunteer work, academic achievements, and extracurricular activities in a professional manner.

“I never realized how much detail goes into a good resume,” said Sarah Jenkins, a junior at Crystal River High. “Ms. Vance showed us how to use action verbs and quantify our accomplishments, which makes a huge difference.”

The guidance department plans to host similar workshops throughout the year, focusing on other career readiness topics such as interview skills and networking. For more information on upcoming events, students are encouraged to speak with their guidance counselor.
