Local Golf Pros Offer Tips to Correct Hip Sway for Improved Swings
Sarasota golfers looking to refine their game and achieve a more consistent swing on the area's palm-fringed courses are focusing on a common issue: hip sway in the backswing. Local golf instructors are sharing insights and techniques to help players eliminate this movement, which can lead to power loss and inconsistent ball striking.
According to golf professionals at area courses, hip sway occurs when a golfer's hips move excessively laterally away from the target during the backswing. This shift can disrupt the body's rotation, making it difficult to return the club to the ball squarely and powerfully.
"Many of our members at The Meadows Country Club in Sarasota's serene Meadows neighborhood come to us with this exact problem," explained Mark Johnson, Head Golf Professional. "They feel like they're trying to get more power by shifting, but it actually does the opposite. It throws off their balance and makes solid contact a real challenge."
Instructors emphasize that a stable lower body is crucial for an effective golf swing. Instead of a lateral shift, the goal is to achieve a controlled rotation of the hips and shoulders around a central axis. This allows for a more efficient transfer of energy and better clubhead speed.
One common drill recommended by local pros involves placing a golf club or alignment stick vertically outside the right hip (for right-handed golfers) during practice. The objective is to complete the backswing without touching the stick, indicating that the hips are rotating rather than swaying.
"It's all about awareness and repetition," said Sarah Chen, a teaching pro at the historic Bobby Jones Golf Club. "Once golfers understand what a stable backswing feels like, they can start to incorporate it into their full swing. We often see immediate improvements in their ball striking and consistency."
Another tip involves focusing on the lead knee (left knee for right-handed golfers) during the backswing. Maintaining its position or allowing only a slight inward movement can help prevent the hips from drifting too far. Strengthening core muscles and improving flexibility are also cited as beneficial for maintaining a stable lower body throughout the swing.
For Sarasota golfers struggling with hip sway, local golf facilities offer lessons and clinics designed to address this and other swing faults. Investing in professional guidance can lead to a more enjoyable and consistent game on the greens.
