Local Coffee Enthusiasts Share French Press Tips
For many Citrus County residents, a good cup of coffee is an essential start to the day, especially with the morning sun rising over the Withlacoochee River. While local coffee shops like the Mug & Bean on Main Street or the Lakeside Cafe near Fort Island Trail offer expertly brewed beverages, a growing number of residents are perfecting their at-home coffee craft, with the French press gaining particular popularity.
Local coffee aficionado, Martha Jenkins of Inverness, shared her insights on achieving the perfect French press brew. "It's all about the grind and the water temperature," Jenkins explained during a recent informal gathering at the Citrus County Library System's Inverness branch. "You want a coarse, even grind, almost like sea salt. If it's too fine, you'll get a muddy cup."
Jenkins recommends using water just off the boil, around 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and letting the coffee steep for four minutes. "Don't rush it," she advises. "That's where the flavor really develops." She also stressed the importance of good quality beans, suggesting residents explore options from local grocers or even consider ordering from Florida-based roasters.
Another tip from local resident and former barista, Tom Peterson of Crystal River, known for its pristine springs, is to pre-warm the French press with hot water before adding the coffee grounds. "It helps maintain the brewing temperature and ensures a more consistent extraction," Peterson noted. He also emphasized cleaning the French press thoroughly after each use to prevent residual coffee oils from affecting future brews.
Whether you're a seasoned coffee drinker or just starting your journey into home brewing, these local tips offer a simple path to a richer, more flavorful cup right here in Citrus County.
