Local Anglers Share Top Bait Choices for West Coast Waters

Staff Writer

Marco Island fishing enthusiasts are always looking for an edge, and when it comes to bait, local knowledge is king. While there's no single 'best' bait, seasoned anglers on the West Coast of Florida consistently point to a few key options depending on the target species and fishing conditions.

For those chasing snook, redfish, and trout in the backwaters and around the mangroves of the nearby Ten Thousand Islands, live shrimp remains a perennial favorite. Its natural scent and movement are irresistible to many inshore species. Similarly, live pilchards, often netted fresh in the morning, are highly effective for a wide range of game fish, including larger snook and tarpon.

When venturing into the Gulf for snapper, grouper, or kingfish, cut bait like Spanish mackerel or mullet often yields excellent results. Many local captains also swear by live pinfish or grunts for bottom fishing, as their hardiness makes them ideal for deeper waters and stronger currents. Artificial lures, particularly soft plastics mimicking shrimp or baitfish, also have their place, especially for those who prefer to cast and retrieve.

Ultimately, the best bait often comes down to what's available and what the fish are feeding on that day. Local bait shops, like those found near the Marco River Marina or in the historic Old Marco neighborhood along Collier Boulevard, are excellent resources for fresh bait and up-to-the-minute advice on what's biting.
