Local Campers Share Tips for Brewing the Perfect Cup Outdoors

LITHIA – As spring weather encourages more residents to explore the great outdoors, many Lithia campers are sharing their tried-and-true methods for enjoying a fresh cup of coffee even when far from home. Whether it's a weekend at Alafia River State Park or a relaxing outing at Lithia Springs, a good brew can make all the difference.

Local outdoor enthusiasts emphasize that making coffee while camping doesn't require elaborate equipment. "It's all about simplicity and enjoying the process," says longtime Lithia resident and avid camper, Sarah Jenkins. "You don't need a fancy espresso machine; a basic setup works wonders."

One popular method involves the classic pour-over technique. Campers often pack a small, collapsible pour-over cone, paper filters, and pre-ground coffee. The process is straightforward: heat water over a camp stove or campfire, place the filter and coffee in the cone over a mug, and slowly pour hot water over the grounds. This method is praised for its clean taste and minimal cleanup.

Another favorite among Lithia's camping community is the French press. Portable French presses are readily available and allow for a richer, full-bodied coffee. The key, according to local adventurer Mark Thompson, is to use coarse-ground coffee to avoid sediment. "Just add hot water, let it steep for a few minutes, and press," Thompson advises. "It's incredibly satisfying on a cool morning."

For those who prefer a more rustic approach, the cowboy coffee method remains a staple. This involves boiling water with coffee grounds directly in a pot. Once the coffee has brewed, a splash of cold water can help settle the grounds to the bottom. While perhaps not as refined, it's effective and requires only a pot and coffee.

Regardless of the method, campers stress the importance of quality coffee and fresh water. Many suggest pre-grinding beans at home to save time and effort at the campsite. Packing a reliable heat source, whether a small propane stove or the ability to build a safe campfire, is also crucial.

As residents plan their upcoming outdoor adventures in Hillsborough County, these simple tips from fellow Lithia campers can help ensure that a delicious cup of coffee is always within reach, adding a touch of home comfort to any wilderness experience.
