Las Vegas Schools Pilot AI Tutoring to Lift Reading Scores

LAS VEGAS — Clark County School District, Nevada's largest with over 300,000 students, is piloting the Ignite virtual tutoring program to combat lagging reading skills among elementary pupils. Launched at Laura Dearing Elementary and Matt Kelly Elementary, the initiative pairs students with Teach for America, Nevada tutors via AI-enhanced virtual sessions. Fourth- and fifth-graders at these Las Vegas campuses receive 30 minutes of small-group instruction five days a week, supplementing core classroom teaching with targeted skill-building.

Early results from the halfway mark show striking progress: more than 90% of participants at Laura Dearing Elementary achieved academic growth in reading proficiency. School officials, including reading strategist Allie Bosser, credit the program's individualized focus for transforming shy students into confident learners who eagerly engage in group discussions. "We had over 90% of our students showing growth," Bosser noted, highlighting gains even for high performers like student Olivia.

The pilot addresses Nevada's persistent K-12 reading challenges, where Clark County schools serve diverse populations across the Las Vegas Valley. District leaders report multiple benefits, from improved speaking skills with adults to better tracking of student needs.
