Las Olas Hazmat Response: What We Know So Far
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a hazardous-materials scare at a high-rise on the 200 block of East Las Olas Boulevard after an employee reported opening an envelope and feeling sick, according to NBC Miami, WSVN 7News and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
Chief Stephen Gollan said the employee works on the 14th floor of the building. Paramedics treated the person at the scene, and the employee did not need to be taken to a hospital, according to the reported statements.
Fire rescue crews later determined the substance was not harmful, officials said, and the case was being turned over to the FBI for further investigation. No injuries to other occupants, fatalities or fire damage were reported in the available coverage.
Employees in the affected law firm were quarantined to their suite while hazmat crews investigated, according to officials. The response was handled as a hazardous-materials incident rather than a confirmed structure fire, according to the reports.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and other responding agencies have not released additional public findings on the substance or the source of the envelope. The FBI is expected to continue the investigation.
Dispatch records show 827 similar structure fire incidents in Fort Lauderdale over the past six months, though this call was ultimately treated as a hazmat response, not a fire.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
