Lakeland Remembers Beloved Obituary Writer, Eleanor Vance

Lakeland is mourning the loss of Eleanor Vance, a cherished member of the community and the dedicated obituary writer for the Lakeland Chronicle for over three decades. Ms. Vance passed away peacefully at her home on Elm Street last Tuesday, April 2, 2026, at the age of 88.

For generations of Lakeland families, Eleanor Vance was the quiet, compassionate voice that helped them navigate moments of profound grief. Her meticulously crafted obituaries were more than just announcements; they were heartfelt tributes that captured the essence of a life lived, often weaving in personal anecdotes and details that only someone deeply connected to the town could know. Many residents recall her gentle demeanor and her ability to find the perfect words to honor their loved ones.

Born and raised in the sunny city of Lakeland, Eleanor graduated from Lakeland High School in 1955. She began her career at the Chronicle as a proofreader in the early 1970s before taking on the role of obituary writer in 1993. Her commitment to accuracy and her profound respect for each individual's story earned her the admiration of colleagues and the gratitude of countless families.

"Eleanor had a way of making every life sound important, because to her, every life was important," said Robert Jenkins, editor of the Lakeland Chronicle. "She understood the fabric of this town, and she understood that an obituary wasn't just a record, but a final, loving message to the community. She will be deeply missed, not just by us at the paper, but by everyone who ever read her words or had the privilege of knowing her."

Beyond her professional duties, Ms. Vance was an active volunteer at the Lakeland Public Library, where she organized the annual 'Local Authors Showcase' for many years. She was also a long-time member of the Lakeland Historical Society, contributing to several local history projects.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, April 12, at 11:00 AM at St. Jude's Episcopal Church on historic Main Street, with a reception to follow at the church hall. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lakeland Public Library in Eleanor Vance's name.
