Kyiv reports 21 fatalities after overnight Russian attacks

July 18, 2026

KYIV, Ukraine – Russian forces carried out an 11-hour period of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv overnight into Thursday morning, killing 21 civilians within the Ukrainian capital. Officials in Kyiv also reported numerous injuries following the attacks.

Russian authorities attributed the strikes to retaliation for Ukrainian operations against Russian oil facilities. The Russian Defense Ministry stated its military conducted a series of strikes targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure and military industrial facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the impact, stating the attacks caused significant damage to residential areas and critical infrastructure. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, indicated emergency services responded to numerous fires and structural damage across several districts, including Holosiivskyi, Pecherskyi, and Obolonskyi.

Emergency workers recovered bodies from damaged buildings, with search and rescue operations continuing throughout the morning. Medical personnel treated injured individuals at various sites.

Ukrainian air defense systems engaged incoming projectiles. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting a significant number of drones and missiles over the Kyiv region.
