Kyiv Attack Kills 15 Amid Ukrainian Air Defense Concerns

KYIV, UKRAINE – An attack on Thursday killed at least 15 individuals in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials. The strike targeted residential apartment blocks and warehouses.

Ukrainian authorities described the assault as "massive." Kyiv sustained damage to multiple structures.

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that Ukraine faces a critical shortage of air defense systems and ammunition. He conveyed this message to Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, emphasizing that Russia maintains air superiority. Mr. Umerov indicated that Russia fires three times more ammunition than Ukraine along the front lines. He also highlighted Russia's use of guided aerial bombs, which have increased in frequency since January 2024.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian Presidential Office, issued a call for immediate air defense assistance. He specified the need for Patriot and SAMP/T systems to protect Ukraine's skies. Mr. Podolyak asserted that Ukraine requires these systems now, not later.

Separately, the Prosecutor General's office reported that recent Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in the Kharkiv region killed five people. These strikes occurred in various settlements across the region. Additionally, Russian forces reportedly used a new glide bomb, weighing 1,500 kilograms, in their attacks on Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the current situation as difficult. He stated that Ukrainian forces are attempting to stabilize their positions. Mr. Zelenskyy also reported damage to all thermal power plants and most hydropower plants in Ukraine, impacting electricity generation capabilities. He noted that Ukraine's remaining gas storage facilities are still under threat. Ukrainian energy companies have received assistance from Germany, including power transformers and generators, to help manage the impact of the attacks.
