Kingfish Season Kicks Off, Anglers Head to Gulf Waters

As April rolls on, Saint Petersburg anglers are eagerly anticipating the start of kingfish season, with many already heading out into the Gulf of Mexico in search of the prized migratory fish. The waters off our Sunshine City coast are known for excellent kingfish opportunities, drawing both seasoned fishermen and recreational enthusiasts.

King mackerel, commonly known as kingfish, are a popular target due to their fighting spirit and delicious meat. Local bait and tackle shops along the waterfront, from John's Pass to the St. Pete Pier, have reported increased activity as residents stock up on necessary gear, including live bait like sardines and threadfin herring, and specialized lures.

While there are no specific closed seasons for kingfish in Florida, April typically marks the beginning of their strong presence in our nearshore and offshore waters as they migrate north along the Pinellas County coastline. Anglers are reminded to adhere to current regulations set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which include bag limits and minimum size requirements to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

Many local fishing charters operating out of marinas like those in Tierra Verde and Gulfport are already booking up for kingfish trips, offering residents and visitors a chance to experience the thrill of reeling in one of these powerful fish. The economic impact of this seasonal fishery is significant for our local businesses, from bait suppliers to boat mechanics and restaurants.

Residents planning to fish for kingfish are encouraged to check the latest FWC regulations before heading out. Information can be found on the FWC website or by visiting local tackle shops along Central Avenue, which often have up-to-date guides and advice for a successful and legal fishing experience.
