Winter Fishing at Its Best in Key West
Winter Fishing at Its Best in Key West
Key West anglers enjoyed a particularly fruitful winter fishing season, with many reporting excellent catches across various species. While specific numbers are still being compiled by local charter captains and bait shops along the Historic Seaport, anecdotal evidence suggests a strong showing for both offshore and inshore fishing.
Local fishing guides, including Captain Mike of "Reel Fun Charters" operating out of Garrison Bight, a historic marina in the island's old naval yard, noted an abundance of sailfish and wahoo offshore. "The bite was consistent this year, especially in January and February," Captain Mike commented. "We had some fantastic days out on the water, bringing in some real beauties for our clients."
Inshore, the flats around the Marquesas Keys and the backcountry near Fleming Key also saw good activity. Permit and bonefish were frequently sighted, providing a challenge for fly fishermen. Local bait and tackle shops, like the one on Stock Island, reported brisk sales of live shrimp and pilchards throughout the cooler months, indicating steady angler traffic.
As the weather warms and spring approaches, local fishermen are now looking forward to the tarpon migration, which typically picks up in late April and May, promising another exciting season for Key West's vibrant fishing community, a cornerstone of Conch life since the 19th century.
