Key West Fishing Report: March 23, 2026
Key West anglers enjoyed a productive week leading up to March 23, 2026, with reports of strong catches both inshore and offshore. Local captains noted favorable conditions for a variety of species, making for happy customers and full coolers.
Offshore, the mahi-mahi bite was consistent, particularly for boats venturing out to the deeper waters of the Gulf Stream beyond the reef. Captain Mike Johnson, who docks his charter at the Historic Seaport, reported several successful trips with mahi weighing in between 10 and 20 pounds. "The weed lines were holding fish, and we had some great action," Captain Johnson shared. Sailfish were also making an appearance, with a few released by sportfishing boats.
Closer to shore, the patch reefs and wrecks were yielding good numbers of yellowtail snapper and cero mackerel. Many local Conchs fishing from their own boats or smaller charters found success using live pilchards and cut bait. Bonefish and permit were active on the flats, providing a challenge for fly fishermen in the backcountry. Guide Sarah Miller, known for her expertise in the shallow waters around the Marquesas, guided a client to a personal best permit catch last Wednesday.
Looking ahead, local bait shops like the Key West Bait & Tackle on North Roosevelt Boulevard anticipate continued good fishing as the weather patterns remain stable. Anglers are advised to check local tide charts and weather forecasts for the best fishing opportunities in the coming days.
