Live Bait for the Win!
Key West anglers are buzzing about the recent success of using live bait, particularly pilchards and pinfish, to land impressive catches in local waters. While the practice isn't new, a noticeable increase in its effectiveness has been reported by several charter captains and recreational fishermen over the past few weeks.
Captain Mark "Sharky" Jones, who operates out of the historic Key West Bight Marina, noted a significant improvement in his clients' hauls. "We've been seeing a lot more action on the live stuff," Captain Jones stated. "Especially for yellowtail snapper and even some of the bigger grouper out on the reefs. It's making a real difference in the cooler at the end of the day."
Local bait shops, such as The Saltwater Angler on Greene Street in the heart of Old Town, have seen a corresponding uptick in demand for live pilchards and pinfish. "We're selling out almost daily," said shop owner Maria Rodriguez. "Fishermen are coming in early to get the freshest bait, saying it's the secret to their success right now."
The trend is particularly evident around the shallower patch reefs and wrecks just offshore from Key West, where the live bait seems to be irresistible to a variety of species. Anglers are advised to check local regulations regarding bait collection and fishing limits before heading out.
