Jon DePreter: A profile of St. Augustine's newest commissioner

St. Augustine residents know Jon DePreter as the city commissioner holding Seat One, a position he will hold until his four-year term expires in December 2028. DePreter brings a background as a Hudson Valley entrepreneur and a long-standing commitment to local public service to his role.

DePreter's journey to city hall began decades ago. He and his wife, Andrea, purchased their home in Lighthouse Park in 1993, using it as a second residence before making St. Augustine their full-time home in 2012. Before his retirement to the city, DePreter owned a sign and graphics business in the Hudson Valley and tri-state area, serving New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. His business designed, fabricated, and installed signs, murals, and graphics for both businesses and homeowners. He also consulted with municipalities on wayfaring and brand identity signage, and collaborated with non-profits and conservation groups on graphics for recreational areas.

His dedication to public service in St. Augustine is extensive. DePreter served on the City of St. Augustine's Planning and Zoning Board from 2018 to 2024, including one year as its Chairman. Prior to that, he was President of the Lighthouse Park Neighborhood Association from 2015 to 2018.

Beyond his civic and business endeavors, DePreter is an accomplished artist. He specializes in wood carving, a craft he has practiced and exhibited nationally for over 40 years. His artwork is featured in collections across the United States and Europe. DePreter holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University, Chico, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

In his spare time, DePreter continues to pursue his art and enjoys the culinary, cultural, and outdoor recreational opportunities St. Augustine offers.
