Jacksonville City Council Approves New Sidewalk Project for Elm Street

The Jacksonville City Council voted unanimously last night, April 7, 2026, to approve funding for a new sidewalk construction project along Elm Street, from Oak Avenue to Pine Street. The decision came during their regular bi-weekly meeting at City Hall in downtown Jacksonville, located at 200 E. Main Street.

The project, estimated to cost $150,000, aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in a heavily trafficked residential area of Duval County. "This has been a long-standing request from residents in that neighborhood, especially those with young children walking to school," stated Councilwoman Sarah Jenkins, whose district includes the affected section of Elm Street. Construction is slated to begin in late summer, with an expected completion by early fall. Further details regarding construction timelines and potential traffic impacts will be announced by the Public Works Department in the coming weeks.
