Israeli strikes reported in Lebanon as ceasefire holds uncertainly
Lebanese state media reported Israeli military strikes across the country Tuesday, challenging the stability of a recently announced ceasefire between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah.
According to reports from Lebanese outlets, Israeli forces conducted multiple attacks in various regions of Lebanon. Local sources documented at least 16 deaths from the strikes. The reported military action occurred despite both sides publicly announcing they had agreed to halt hostilities.
Hezbollah fighters responded with their own strikes against Israeli targets, according to multiple news organizations tracking the conflict. The exchange of fire suggested neither side had fully ceased combat operations despite the truce announcement.
The continued fighting threatens separate diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran. Officials from both nations had begun preliminary discussions aimed at reducing regional tensions, but the escalating violence in Lebanon complicates those negotiations.
Neither Israel nor Lebanon's government immediately released detailed statements accounting for all reported strikes or casualties. Military officials from both sides have periodically acknowledged operations while accusing the other party of ceasefire violations.
The ceasefire agreement, announced in recent days, was intended to end months of escalating cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah. The organization, which operates as both a political party and armed militia in Lebanon, has exchanged fire with Israeli forces repeatedly over the past year.
U.S. officials have expressed concern that continued hostilities could undermine their attempts to broker a broader diplomatic settlement involving Iran. The State Department has not released a statement addressing the reported violations or their impact on scheduled talks.
