Israeli and Hezbollah forces exchange fire despite ceasefire framework
The Israeli Defense Force struck targets in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, stating the operation targeted Hezbollah positions following a barrage of projectile fire from the militant group.
The IDF said Hezbollah fired over 50 projectiles toward Israeli forces. In response, the military conducted airstrikes it characterized as targeting Hezbollah sites. Military officials did not immediately provide a casualty count for the strikes.
Reports from Lebanon indicated deaths in the southern region, though specific numbers and circumstances remained unclear as of Tuesday afternoon. Lebanese health officials and international monitors did not immediately release casualty figures.
The exchange occurred amid a ceasefire framework between Israel and Hezbollah, though both sides have reported sporadic violations since the arrangement took effect. International observers have monitored compliance with the agreement, which was designed to halt months of cross-border conflict.
Hezbollah did not issue a statement regarding Tuesday's activity. The group has previously defended its military operations as responses to Israeli actions in the region.
The Israeli military has said it maintains the right to respond to what it describes as attacks originating from Lebanese territory. Hezbollah representatives have said the group retains the same prerogative regarding Israeli military activity.
The ceasefire framework allows for specified military activities by both Israel and Lebanese forces operating under government authority. Disputes over the terms' interpretation have led to multiple incidents since the agreement's implementation.
International mediators involved in brokering the ceasefire said they continue monitoring the situation and communicating with both parties to prevent wider escalation.
