The incident on the Iranian vessel occurred after increased threats to shipping in the Red Sea. Last week, Iran-backed Houthi rebels, engaged in conflict with government forces in Yemen, captured an island on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait serves as a shipping alternative to the Strait of Hormuz.
