TEHRAN – Iran has presented a series of demands for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane. Iranian officials stated that access to the strait depends on the United States altering its regional policies and lifting economic sanctions. Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, confirmed ongoing discussions with Omani officials regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Amirabdollahian characterized these talks as being in their "final stages." He further stated that an agreement with Oman had been reached in principle, but its implementation hinges on U.S. actions. "An agreement has been reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation depends on American actions," Amirabdollahian said. Specifically, Iran requires the United States to demonstrate a "correct attitude" and address what Iran views as "illegal sanctions." Iranian officials reiterated that their commitment to the strait's closure remains firm until these conditions are met. Mohammad Javad Zarif, an advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, emphasized that the strait would not fully reopen unless the United States "corrects its behavior." The proposed agreement with Oman reportedly involves a commitment from the United States to not interfere with Iranian oil tankers and to facilitate the release of Iranian assets frozen in South Korean banks. These assets amount to approximately $7 billion. In return, Iran would agree to release three American citizens currently detained in Iran. These individuals include Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, and Morad Tahbaz. Namazi has been held since 2015, while Shargi and Tahbaz were arrested in 2018. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. However, the United States has imposed sanctions following Iran's alleged breaches of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
