Intel Opens $3B Hillsboro Fab, Boosting Oregon Jobs
Hillsboro, Ore. — Intel Corp. marked the grand opening of its $3 billion Mod3 expansion at the D1X leading-edge factory in Hillsboro on Thursday, adding 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space for developing next-generation silicon process technologies. CEO Pat Gelsinger joined senior government officials and community leaders for the ribbon-cutting, emphasizing Intel's commitment to U.S. semiconductor leadership during a ceremony at the newly renamed Gordon Moore Park at Ronler Acres. The 500-acre site serves as headquarters for Intel's global Technology Development team of about 10,000 employees advancing transistor architectures, wafer processes and packaging.
Intel's Oregon operations represent its largest worldwide concentration of facilities and talent, with nearly 22,000 employees across four Hillsboro campuses just 20 miles west of Portland. The Mod3 project brings Intel's cumulative investment in the state to more than $52 billion after nearly 50 years of presence. Engineers at D1X will develop multiple logic process technologies simultaneously, transferring them to Intel's global manufacturing sites for applications in PCs, cloud infrastructure and 5G networks.
The expansion arrives amid broader federal support for Intel, including a $3 billion Department of Defense contract to bolster secure U.S. tech systems, $8.5 billion in CHIPS Act grants and $11 billion in loans aimed at creating 10,000 manufacturing jobs and 20,000 construction roles across several states. Oregon chipped in $115 million to subsidize D1X upgrades and factory construction in Hillsboro. Despite earlier layoffs, the investment underscores Hillsboro's status as a semiconductor hub powering national innovation.
