Inflation Surge Lifts 2027 Social Security COLA Forecasts to 4.2%
National Desk

Rising inflation has sparked upward revisions in projections for Social Security's 2027 cost-of-living adjustment, with independent analyst Mary Johnson now estimating a 4.2% increase, up from her 3.2% forecast last month. The Senior Citizens League, a nonprofit advocacy group for seniors, pegged the COLA at 3.9%, a jump from its prior 2.8% prediction. These updates, released Tuesday following April's Bureau of Labor Statistics report, reflect a 3.9% year-over-year rise in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, the metric used for COLA calculations—the fastest pace since May 2023.
The inflation spike stems from sharp increases in essentials like gasoline, home heating oil, tomatoes, coffee, and fresh vegetables, exacerbated by U.S. involvement in a Middle East conflict. Johnson attributes her higher forecast to these trends, noting they could 'reshape household budgets for the vast majority of older consumers.' For context, the 2026 COLA was 2.8%, but April's overall CPI climbed 3.8%, outpacing that adjustment and underscoring seniors' eroding purchasing power.
A 3.9% COLA would add about $81.17 monthly to the average retirement benefit of roughly $2,081, according to the Senior Citizens League. However, the group calculates Social Security has lost 13.7% in buying power since 2016, requiring a 15.7% catch-up—or $295.85 extra per month—to break even. 'Inflation affects seniors differently,' said TSCL Executive Director Craig Benton, citing fixed incomes and unique expenses like healthcare.
The Social Security Administration will finalize the 2027 COLA in October, basing it solely on third-quarter CPI-W data from July through September compared to 2025. This backward-looking method means beneficiaries could lose ground if prices accelerate outside that window. Johnson's next update is set for June 10, with pre-war January estimates as low as 1.2% highlighting how dramatically forecasts have shifted.
