Maitland Extends Independence Lane Downtown in June
Construction begins in June on a six-month extension of Independence Lane in downtown Maitland, adding nearly 600 linear feet of roadway between George Avenue and Horatio Avenue.
The city designed the new section to match the existing Independence Lane, which was reconstructed in 2018. That project created a brick-paved street with wide concrete walkways, trees, lighting, park benches, and bike racks between Horatio and Packwood avenues.
Independence Lane hosts restaurants, shops, and nearly 250 apartments in the adjacent Maitland City Centre, along with City Hall. The nearby Independence Square park, rebuilt in 2020, hosts public events including Getdown Downtown street parties, the weekly Maitland Farmer's Market, Movies in the Park, and the Maitland Jazz and Blues Festival.
Businesses on Independence Lane include Brewlando Brewery, Houndstooth Kitchen and Eatery, Fleet Feet, Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream, Parea Greek Taverna, Starbucks, and Floyd's 99 Barbershop.
The project received a $500,000 community development block grant. U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost supported the grant.
