Idaho Falls Anglers: 13,000+ Rainbow Trout Stocked in Local Waters This May
National Desk
May 3, 2026
IDAHO FALLS — Personnel from Idaho Fish and Game’s Southeast Region hatcheries are stocking more than 13,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout across eastern Idaho waters throughout May, officials announced.[1] The releases target popular spots ideal for family fishing trips and weekend escapes, with fish measuring 10-12 inches for immediate action.[2] Stocking schedules remain tentative, subject to water conditions, angler safety, weather and staffing.[1]
Key destinations include Bannock Reservoir with 1,000 rainbow trout, Bear River below Oneida Dam receiving 2,000, and Devil Creek Reservoir getting 2,200.[1] Crystal Springs Pond and Twin Lakes Reservoir each gain 1,000 trout, while Edson Fichter Pond sees 1,900 and Upper Kelly Park Pond 250.[1] These sites, scattered across Power County and nearby areas, draw crowds from Pocatello to Idaho Falls for easy-access shore fishing.[1]
Idaho Fish and Game stocks over 30 million fish annually statewide, prioritizing rainbow trout and kokanee salmon in lowland lakes, reservoirs and rivers.[2] The Southeast Region's May push follows March's 110,000-trout statewide release, including 18,000 at American Falls Reservoir and 3,600 at Glendale Reservoir.[3] Anglers must possess a valid fishing license; check idfg.idaho.gov for updates and full schedules.[1][2]
