IBM Boosts Essex Quantum Hub, Eyes VT Jobs Surge

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. — IBM announced Monday an expansion of its quantum computing operations at the historic Essex Junction facility, building on decades of semiconductor prowess in Vermont. The investment, detailed in a VTDigger report, aims to accelerate quantum research while creating 200 new jobs in advanced computing and engineering over the next three years. This move revitalizes a site where IBM launched operations in 1957, once employing over 8,000 Vermonters at its peak.

The Essex plant, transferred to GlobalFoundries in 2015, has evolved under complementary tech initiatives, including a $23 million federal GaN Tech Hub at the University of Vermont. IBM's quantum push integrates with these efforts, leveraging nearby GaN production—bolstered by $9.5 million in recent U.S. funding and a prior $35 million CHIPS Act award—for high-frequency devices in defense and data centers. Quantum hardware from IBM, featuring processors scaling to over 1,000 qubits by 2026, will drive simulations unattainable by classical computers.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott praised the announcement, noting it secures the region's tech ecosystem amid national chip wars. 'Essex Junction remains Vermont's innovation engine,' Scott said in a statement. Local unions and the Vermont Chamber of Commerce anticipate the jobs will stabilize families in Chittenden County, where IBM's legacy has shaped the economy since the 1950s.

IBM Research leads the quantum charge, with toolkits for error-corrected computing set for 2029 deployment. This positions Vermont workers—many retrained from GaN and silicon fabs—at the vanguard of a field projected to unlock breakthroughs in materials science and cryptography.
