Hy-Vee Eyes New Bakery Warehouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

National Desk
May 4, 2026
The Cedar Rapids City Council unanimously approved financial incentives Tuesday for two new warehouse projects in the city's Midwest Commerce Park, including a 50,000-square-foot facility at 655 Capital Dr. SW to be leased by Hy-Vee as a bakery and distribution center. Economic development manager Caleb Mason told the council the Hy-Vee project, paired with a 100,000-square-foot headquarters for Worley Warehousing at 10025 Atlantic Dr. SW, qualifies under the High Quality Jobs program. That program requires at least 10 jobs paying $24.40 per hour or more and offers a 10-year, 50% tax rebate on increased property taxes generated by the developments. Hy-Vee's facility is projected to create 30 new jobs and generate $1.1 million in taxes over 10 years, with the city reimbursing $465,000 if employment targets are met. West Des Moines-based Hy-Vee, which operates more than 280 stores across eight Midwest states, continues to invest in Iowa infrastructure despite recent challenges. The grocer recently shuttered centralized bakery operations in Cedar Rapids and two major food production facilities in central Iowa, impacting nearly 500 workers statewide, according to company spokesperson Tina Potthoff. This Cedar Rapids expansion aligns with Hy-Vee's broader supply chain upgrades, including a 635,000-square-foot distribution center under construction off I-35 in Cumming for its Lomar Distributing specialty products division. Meanwhile, Hy-Vee has ramped up community efforts, surpassing a goal to provide 102 million meals to Feeding America and 19 Midwest food banks through a campaign that ended after 20 months of customer and supplier donations. The initiatives underscore Hy-Vee's dual focus on operational efficiency and Iowa-rooted philanthropy.
