Hurricane Season Preparations Underway in Jacksonville

With hurricane season fast approaching, Jacksonville residents are encouraged to begin their preparations now. Local emergency management officials emphasize the importance of having a plan in place before the first storm threat emerges.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1st each year, and forecasters are already predicting an active season. While it's impossible to predict specific storm paths, the city's Emergency Preparedness Division is urging all households to review their emergency kits, secure important documents, and establish evacuation routes.

"Every year, we stress the same message: prepare early," stated a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness Division. "Don't wait until a storm is bearing down on us to gather supplies or figure out where you'll go. A little planning now can make a huge difference when it matters most."

Residents should ensure their emergency kits include at least three days' worth of non-perishable food and water, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. It's also crucial to have a full tank of gas in vehicles and to charge all electronic devices.

For those living in flood-prone areas near the St. Johns River or mobile homes, understanding evacuation zones and routes is paramount. Information on these zones, as well as shelter locations, is available on the city's official website and through local news channels. The city will also be distributing preparedness guides at community centers and libraries in neighborhoods like Riverside and Springfield throughout May.

Local hardware stores and supermarkets are already stocking up on hurricane supplies, and residents are advised to purchase items gradually to avoid last-minute rushes. Taking these proactive steps now will help ensure the safety and well-being of all Jacksonville families during the upcoming hurricane season.
