Hudson Brush Fire: What We Know So Far
A fire along U.S. 19 in Hudson did not leave any reported injuries or serious property damage, according to the Florida Forest Service. Officials initially suspected arson, but investigators later determined the blaze was caused by an untended campfire, and this is what we know so far.
Investigators found the remains of a recreational campfire east of U.S. 19, according to the Florida Forest Service. By Tuesday morning, the fire was 50% contained, and crews were still monitoring the area for days, if not weeks.
Officials said all lanes of U.S. 19 between Hudson Avenue and New York Avenue were closed Monday night because of heavy smoke and reopened after rush hour Tuesday morning. Residents were allowed back home around midnight, and no one stayed in a shelter overnight, according to Pasco County spokesman Eric Keaton.
The response included six tractor plows used to build a fire line, along with hoses and backburning to keep the flames from spreading, according to the Florida Forest Service. Pasco County forest area supervisor Kawika Bailey said no injuries or serious damage were reported.
Dispatch records show this was one of 20,252 structure fire incidents in the area over the past six months, though those records do not by themselves indicate a pattern at this specific location.
Officials said people with existing medical conditions should limit outdoor activity and watch for local air quality reports and smoke-related warnings. The investigation into the fire's origin is continuing.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
