WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution to hold billionaire Leon Black in contempt of Congress. Lawmakers then referred the matter to the Department of Justice.
The vote followed Black's non-compliance with subpoenas issued by the House Oversight Committee. The committee had sought his cooperation as part of its investigation into financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Congressional committees issue subpoenas to compel individuals to provide testimony or documents relevant to their inquiries. A contempt of Congress referral asks the Justice Department to consider prosecuting individuals who defy these subpoenas.
