Homestead Police Explorers Program Cultivates Leaders and Community Service Among Local Youth

The Homestead Police Explorers program continues to shape high school students into future leaders and engaged community members. Part of the City of Homestead Police Department, the program targets students aged 14–19 who maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better in each class.

Explorers undergo a Basic Law Enforcement Explorer Academy, which mirrors aspects of a police academy with hands-on training and teambuilding activities. This foundational training instills discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills in participants. Beyond the academy, Explorers actively contribute to the community through initiatives such as neighborhood clean-ups and graffiti paint-outs. Those over 16 and in good standing with both the program and their school can also participate in ride-alongs with officers, gaining direct insight into law enforcement operations.

The program extends beyond local activities, offering participants opportunities to attend leadership conferences, competitions, and college tours. Explorers also engage in teambuilding trips and various community and city events. Many high school graduates who participate throughout their high school years accumulate an impressive 2500 community service hours, demonstrating a significant commitment to public service.
