Hernando County Enters Modified Phase III Extreme Water Shortage
Spring Hill residents, from the neighborhoods of Seven Hills to Timber Pines, are advised that Hernando County has officially entered a Modified Phase III Extreme Water Shortage, effective today, April 8, 2026. This declaration by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) comes as local water resources face significant strain, necessitating stricter conservation measures across the community.
The Modified Phase III designation means that mandatory water restrictions are now in place for all residents and businesses within Spring Hill and the wider Hernando County area. These restrictions primarily target irrigation and non-essential water use, aiming to preserve the region's dwindling water supply.
Under the new guidelines, landscape irrigation is limited to one day per week, with specific watering times determined by property address. Even-numbered addresses are permitted to irrigate on Saturdays, while odd-numbered addresses may water on Sundays. Commercial properties and properties with mixed addresses are assigned Tuesdays. All irrigation must occur either before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM on the designated day. Hand watering of plants and shrubs with a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle is still permitted at any time.
Car washing is also restricted to once per week, again adhering to the even/odd address schedule for irrigation. Pressure washing of driveways and other impervious surfaces is generally prohibited, with exceptions for health and safety reasons, or if required by a governmental agency. New landscaping, however, is granted a 60-day establishment period allowing for more frequent watering, though residents are encouraged to use water wisely even during this period.
Officials emphasize that compliance with these new restrictions is crucial to avoid further escalation of the water shortage and potential penalties. The community's collective effort in conserving water will play a vital role in mitigating the impact of this extreme water shortage on Spring Hill's natural resources and public water systems, including local parks like Anderson Snow Park.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the full details of the Modified Phase III restrictions, which are available on the Hernando County government website. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
