Hernando County Commissioners Approve New Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-2027
Hernando County Commissioners voted unanimously yesterday, April 7, 2026, to approve the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-2027. The approved budget totals $285 million, a 3% increase from the current fiscal year, and includes allocations for several key community projects and services.
A significant portion of the new budget, approximately $15 million, has been earmarked for infrastructure improvements, with a focus on road repairs along Mariner Boulevard and Spring Hill Drive in the Spring Hill community. Additionally, $5 million is designated for upgrades to the Hernando County Fire Rescue Department, including the purchase of two new fire engines to replace aging equipment at Station 2 on Commercial Way and Station 5 on Northcliffe Boulevard.
During the public hearing held at the Hernando County Government Center on Main Street in downtown Brooksville, several residents spoke in favor of increased funding for parks and recreation. Commissioner John Smith acknowledged these concerns, stating, "While this budget addresses immediate needs, we are committed to exploring additional funding avenues for our beloved local parks in future discussions." The new fiscal year officially begins on October 1, 2026.
