A Heat Advisory is in effect until 10:00 PM PDT this evening, October 8, for the San Joaquin Valley, Sierra Nevada foothills, and Coastal West Hills. Residents should take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

High temperatures up to 101 degrees are expected, with overnight lows between 70 and 75 degrees in the Sierra and Coastal Range Foothills where the thermal belt is strongest. This advisory applies to a wide area including West Side Mountains north of 198, Los Banos - Dos Palos, Merced - Madera - Mendota, Planada - Le Grand - Snelling, Coalinga - Avenal, West Side of Fresno and Kings Counties, Caruthers - San Joaquin - Selma, Fresno-Clovis, West Side Mountains South of 198, Buttonwillow - Lost Hills - I5, Delano-Wasco-Shafter, Hanford - Corcoran - Lemoore, Visalia - Porterville - Reedley, Buena Vista, Bakersfield, Southeast San Joaquin Valley, South End San Joaquin Valley, Mariposa Madera Foothills, Mariposa-Madera Lower Sierra, Fresno-Tulare Foothills, Fresno-Tulare Lower Sierra, South End Sierra Foothills, and South End of the Lower Sierra.

The National Weather Service in Hanford, CA, issued this advisory, indicating a moderate to major risk of heat-related illnesses for much of the population, especially those without effective cooling or hydration.

To stay safe, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
