Haitians, Syrians Face Uncertain Status After U.S. Protections Expire

Roughly 350,000 Haitians and Syrians in the United States currently navigate an uncertain immigration status. Their work permits and legal residency under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) have expired. These individuals originally sought refuge from severe crises in their home countries.

The situations in Haiti and Syria, which prompted their initial flight, have not improved significantly. This lack of recovery in their native countries leaves many facing difficult choices regarding their continued residence in the U.S. The expiration of their protections means they no longer possess authorization to work or legally reside in the country.
