Get Ready for Tarpon Early in Holiday Waters
Holiday anglers are advised to prepare for an earlier-than-usual tarpon season this year. While specific dates for the full migration are always subject to environmental factors, local fishing guides and bait shops along the coastal US-19 corridor in Pasco County are reporting early sightings and increased activity in the Gulf waters off Holiday. This suggests that the silver kings may be arriving in greater numbers sooner than the typical late April to early May timeframe.
Captain Joe's Bait & Tackle on Moog Road noted a significant uptick in inquiries about tarpon tackle and live bait over the past week. "We've had a few reports of smaller schools already moving through," said owner Joe Miller. "It's a good sign for a strong season, and folks should be getting their gear ready now if they want to be ahead of the curve."
Fishermen are encouraged to check their tackle, ensure their reels are spooled with fresh line, and stock up on appropriate baits like threadfin herring and crabs. Local boat ramps, including those at Anclote River Park, a longstanding access point along the Anclote River in Pasco County, are expected to see increased traffic as the season progresses. Residents and visitors planning to target tarpon should also familiarize themselves with current FWC regulations regarding catch-and-release practices and any necessary permits.
