Georgia Wildfires Ravage 52K Acres, Shatter Home Loss Records

National Desk
April 28, 2026
Two ferocious wildfires, the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County and the Pineland Road Fire near the Florida line, have burned more than 52,000 acres across south Georgia since igniting over a week ago.[1][2] The Highway 82 blaze, sparked more than seven days prior, has ballooned to over 22,000 acres—doubling in size within 24 hours—and stands at just 6-7% contained as of Sunday evening, bordering Brantley, Wayne and Glynn counties.[2][7] Extreme drought conditions have transformed the region into a tinderbox, with high winds hindering containment efforts, prompting new evacuation orders and the loss of at least 90 homes and businesses plus 55 smaller structures in Brantley County alone.[2][3] The Pineland Road Fire in Clinch and Echols counties, ignited by sparks from a welding operation, has charred nearly 32,000 acres and destroyed at least 35 homes, reaching about 10% containment by Saturday midday.[3] Combined, the fires have obliterated over 120 homes, surpassing all prior records for wildfire destruction in Georgia, according to Governor Brian Kemp, who toured the devastation Friday and declared them the worst in state history.[1][2][3] New blazes sparked overnight in rural areas, intensifying the crisis and forcing school closures and shelter expansions.[3][6] Reinforcements from across the United States are bolstering Georgia's firefighting ranks as the blazes push into their second week.[4] Officials in Brantley County reported doubled fire sizes by Monday morning, with ongoing heartache for residents facing evacuations and total losses.[6] Kemp met with exhausted first responders Friday, highlighting the unprecedented scale amid a surge in southeastern U.S. wildfires.[1][5] Authorities urge vigilance as containment lags, with the Highway 82 Fire threatening further spread into neighboring counties.[2][7] Resources for affected residents, including shelters, are expanding via state wildfire information hubs.[8]
