FWC Announces New Fishing Limits for Speckled Trout and Redfish in Hernando County

Brooksville anglers, take note: the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced new regulations for recreational speckled trout and redfish harvesting in Hernando County waters, effective May 1, 2026. These changes are part of a broader effort to ensure sustainable fish populations across the state.

For speckled trout, the daily bag limit will be reduced to two fish per person in the Northwest Zone, which includes all of Hernando County. The slot limit for speckled trout will remain at 15-19 inches, with one fish over 19 inches allowed per vessel. For redfish, the daily bag limit will be one fish per person, with a vessel limit of eight fish. The slot limit for redfish will be 18-27 inches.

These adjustments follow extensive scientific review and public input, aiming to bolster fish stocks for future generations of local fishermen. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new rules before heading out onto the Gulf or local rivers. Detailed information can be found on the FWC website, or by visiting local bait and tackle shops like Angler's Dream on Broad Street in historic downtown Brooksville, which often have updated regulation pamphlets.
